The large-format figure 1:16 German SS soldier with MP 40-WWII captures a German soldier with the MP 40 submachine gun, cast in resin in 1:16 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
A German infantryman with a submachine gun is one of the most frequently built subjects, but at a size of around one hundred and twenty millimeters it takes on an entirely different dimension. In the large scale you can work out not only the face and hands but also the pattern of the camouflage cloth, the stitching of the straps or the ribbing of the magazine pouches, that is the things that are only suggested in 1:35.
The weapon in the figure's hands came about in 1940 by simplifying an older model: stampings of sheet metal and bakelite parts took the place of machined ones, which cut the cost and the time of production. It fired a 9 mm pistol cartridge from a straight magazine of thirty-two rounds, it had a folding shoulder stock under the barrel and a rate of fire low enough that single shots could be let off fairly easily. It went mainly to squad leaders, paratroopers and vehicle crews rather than to the ordinary rifleman. The widespread nickname after the designer Schmeisser is in fact a mistake, because he had no part in the design.
On a figure of this size the mottled pattern really is painted rather than suggested. The work goes from the lightest undercoat through a middle tone to dark patches, each coat slightly smaller than the one before, and finally the edges are softened with very thinned paint. A printed pattern also bends with the cloth, so the patches have to follow the folds rather than lie flat.
The piece arrives in raw resin; the finished look remains up to the modeler.
