The large kit 1:16 M4A1(76)W Medium Tank from I Love Kit builds the American Sherman with a cast hull and a long gun into a display-case format.
Responsibility details are not available.
The short 75 mm gun was not enough for American crews in Normandy against more heavily armored machines, and so the M4A1 variant was given a new T23 turret with a high-velocity 76 mm gun. Along with it came wet stowage for the ammunition, meant to lower the risk of a fire after a hit, and front armor with a pair of large hatches for the driver and his assistant. It was precisely these machines that made their mark during Operation Cobra in the summer of 1944.
The 1:16 rendition allows things to be shown for which there is no room in smaller sizes. The built tank measures over forty-five centimeters and is made up of more than two thousand parts; the box lacks neither photo-etched sheets nor workable tracks assembled from individual links. The cast hull has the characteristic rounding and a surface matching a casting, so it comes out well even without further work.
Assembling the tracks from links takes an evening or two and it pays to go at it in shorter runs. Because of the size, it is also good to know in advance where you will put the finished model. The reward is a piece on which even the inside of the hatches can be painted, the welds picked out and wear worked in a scale where every detail is easy to read.
The set belongs in the hands of a builder who already has several finished vehicles behind them and wants to move up to a prestige piece for the display case. A beginner need not be put off by the difficulty of the individual steps, but rather by the overall extent of the work.
