About product

M5A1 Stuart, late version, 1:16 — kit from Classy Hobby

A plastic kit of the American M5A1 Stuart light tank in the late production form, in the unusually large 1:16 scale. The finished model is markedly bigger than the usual 1:48 and 1:35 scales and comes across more as a display exhibit than an ordinary desktop model. The large scale also changes the way you work — every joint, every mark left by sanding and every transition of color is visible from close up.

The real subject

The M5A1 was a development of the proven M3 light tank. Instead of an aircraft radial engine it was given a pair of Cadillac automobile gasoline engines with Hydra-Matic automatic transmissions, which noticeably simplified driving and maintenance. The hull was welded with a sloped front, the turret had a lengthened rear for the radio set and the main armament was a 37 mm gun. The crew consisted of four men. The machines were used from 1943 in Italy, in northwest Europe and in the Pacific — they were already weak against tanks, but served excellently for reconnaissance, escort and infantry support. The late production batches differed from the early machines in details of the equipment and the fittings.

Building and painting tips

Work from the bottom up: finish and paint the running gear, the suspension and everything that becomes inaccessible once the hull is closed before you seat the upper part. In a large scale it pays to fit the joints carefully, to fill them and to sand them out to nothing. Spray the base with an airbrush in several thin coats and work the light modulation into it right away — a large area of uniform olive green looks flat. Filters and dark washes in the corners follow, then a dry brush on the edges and finally dust pigments on the lower hull and the running gear. Apply the decals over a gloss undercoat and finish the whole model with matte clear coat.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers of tracked vehicles who want one large showpiece
  • More experienced builders — a large scale forgives fewer mistakes
  • Lovers of American Second World War vehicles
  • Those who enjoy working with weathering, pigments and fine details

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Above all in its power — instead of a radial engine it was given a pair of Cadillac automobile engines with an automatic transmission. The hull was welded with a sloped front and the turret had a lengthened rear for the radio set.

Rather not. The large scale does make handling the parts easier, but it also shows up every unfinished joint and coarsely applied coat of paint mercilessly. It is more suitable for a modeler who already has something built.

The number of parts and the form of the tracks are stated by the manufacturer on the packaging of the kit. Please go by those details.

It denotes a later production batch, which differed from the first machines in details of the equipment and the fittings. Which of those details the kit captures is stated in the manufacturer's instructions.
