The M551 Sheridan is an American light armored vehicle designed for airborne units, that is a machine that can be carried by air and dropped by parachute. To come out as light as possible it has thin armor and a low build. Its grilles above the engine compartment are clearly visible from above, so on a finished model they are among the first places the eye falls.
The set brings photo-etched grilles in 1:16 scale. A photo-etched fret is a thin metal sheet from which the parts are cut out; compared with the plastic parts from the box the grille has the right thickness and is genuinely see-through, so a shadow forms beneath it and the area stops looking like a blind plate.
The parts are attached to the fret by small tabs. Cut through them with a sharp blade on a hard surface rather than with nippers, otherwise the edge will bend. Make the bends over a straight edge or in a bending tool and press along the whole length at once, so that the line does not ripple. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied in a minimal amount, best of all with the tip of a piece of wire; cement for plastic has no effect on metal. Degrease the parts before painting and use a primer suited to metal, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface and will rub off in handling.
The set is for builders who build the Sheridan in a large scale and want to close the engine compartment more faithfully than the parts in the kit allow.
