A faithful breech of the 7.5 cm PaK 40 anti-tank gun in the large 1:16 scale, prepared for the kit from Das Werk.
Responsibility details are not available.
The 7.5 cm barrel of the PaK 40 ranked from 1942 among the most feared weapons infantry could put in the path of a tank. The piece weighed over a ton and a half, five men served it, and its horizontally sliding wedge breechblock opened by itself after the shot and threw the cartridge case clear, so a trained crew managed around twelve rounds a minute. The gun breech is the most interesting place on the whole weapon: you can see into the guide grooves, the firing mechanism and the seat for the cartridge case.
In the large 1:16 scale a model is usually built with the breech open, because that is the part you show off. The injection-molded part tends to be simplified, since the mold cannot reach into deep undercut shapes. A casting has no such limit and carries sharp edges and small facets that otherwise vanish under filler. Anyone building a large model usually concentrates the most work here, because it is the first place every visitor to a display case looks.
The set is prepared for the kit from Das Werk, which has to be obtained separately. Try the fit dry before you reach for glue: resin can be eased with a file, but material once taken off cannot be put back. The inside of the breech is sprayed in a dark steel shade and once it has dried the edges are run over with a graphite pencil, which creates the sheen of polished metal. The surrounding parts of the weapon call for matte field gray instead.
