Poppies belong among the plant accessories with which the open area around a model is settled. In the large 1:16 scale an individual flower is clearly visible, so it can carry the color accent of the whole scene rather than just merging into the green carpet under the hardware. It is exactly such small things that set a finished scene apart from a model laid on a green base.
Irregularity gives the best result. Plant them in knots of varying density, leave bare spots between them and place a few pieces on their own away from the main group. A strip along a path, the edge of a stubble field or a tuft growing out of a crack in a broken wall also look natural. It pays to keep to the direction in which the stalks around them bend so that the growth works as a whole.
A saturated red looks believable only when the tone differs slightly from piece to piece; add a drop of orange to some of the flowers therefore and a dark wine red to others. The stems deserve a more muted green than the grass growth around them. A drop of thin PVA glue (white glue) applied with a toothpick will hold them in place. Once it has dried, run a dust pigment lightly over the area.
