The Tiger I is a German heavy tank of the Second World War with an 88 mm gun, a boxy slab-sided hull and interleaved road wheels. The 1:16 scale is among the largest ordinarily built: the model has extensive vertical areas on the turret and the side plates, on which the markings are clearly visible and where even a small inaccuracy stands out. Precisely for that reason, on large models decals of good print quality pay off rather than painting through a stencil.
The key to an invisible decal edge is a smooth glossy base. A decal will never go onto matte paint without a silvery haze, because the microscopic roughness of matte traps air under the film. The procedure is therefore: finish the base coat, let it cure properly and spray the spot under the decal with gloss varnish. Cut the decal out close to the design, soak it for a few seconds in lukewarm water, let it rest on a paper towel until the backing releases by itself, and then slide it off the backing onto the moistened spot. You will fine-tune the position with a brush, draw the excess water off and finally press the decal down with a soft cloth.
