An injection-molded plastic kit of the German half-track armored personnel carrier Sd.Kfz. 251 in the Ausf. D version. The 1:16 scale is exceptionally large for military equipment — according to the maker's figures the finished model has a length of roughly 397 mm and a width of approximately 139 mm. Count on the display case and the workbench having to have enough room. The set is mostly of gray plastic, and some of the frames are molded in a rust-colored shade; photo-etched parts, rubber tires for the front wheels, individual track links, a well worked interior with the driver's position and machine guns on swing arms at the front and the rear are included. The decals offer six marking variants complemented by color drawings.
The Sd.Kfz. 251, known in modeling and military slang as the Hanomag, was a half-track armored personnel carrier: wheels at the front, a tracked running gear at the rear. Its task was not to fight like a tank but to bring Panzergrenadiers right up behind the attacking tanks and to keep pace with them off the roads as well. The hull is open at the top, which gave the crew a view out and a quick exit, but no protection against shrapnel from above. The Ausf. D is the later, production-simplified version with smooth sloped sides at the rear. The vehicle is one of the most typical images of the German armored formations of the war.
The open hull is the greatest opportunity and the greatest commitment here: once it is built the interior is visible in its entirety, so it pays to paint and weather the inside before you close the hull up. In the same way, finish the running gear and the tracks before fitting the fenders — a brush will not reach them afterwards. Glue with a liquid cement for plastic, spray a primer and apply the paint with an airbrush. For the patina use washes in the recesses and pigments for mud and dust effects on the tracks and the fenders. In this scale every detail is visible — but so is every gap that has not been dealt with.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
