Front wheels with the common Continental off-road design for a large-scale model of the Sd.Kfz. 251 half-track in 1:16.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Sd.Kfz. 251 medium armored personnel carrier was among the most striking machines of the German mechanized infantry. At the front it had an ordinary steered axle on leaf springs, at the rear overlapping road wheels with needle bearings and rubber tires. The front wheels were not powered and served practically only for turning; in deep terrain the driver rather dragged them, because the turning was handled by braking the tracks. Even so it is just those that catch the eye first on a model, because they stand closest to the observer and are carried by the visible fork of the fender.
At 1:16 the tire grows to a diameter of over six centimeters and every detail is enlarged along with it. The lettering on the sidewall, the bead, the valve and the individual tread blocks stop being merely suggested and become a fully fledged shape. An injected part manages this only to a certain degree: in the parting line a surface arises that has to be laboriously restored with a file. A replacement wheel gets around this problem, because the tread is closed around the whole circumference.
The designation Common corresponds to the more common off-road pattern of the Continental brand, that is the one that appears more often in period photographs. The set is aimed at the Sd.Kfz. 251 kit in 1:16 from the Das Werk brand. When painting, a base in dark gray proves itself, along with a final misting in a dust shade from the top down, so that the rubber does not merge with the chassis.
