An injection-molded plastic kit of the American carrier dive bomber Douglas SBD-3/4 Dauntless in 1:18 from the manufacturer I Love Kit. Please read this carefully: 1:18 is an absolutely exceptional scale for an aircraft. The usual aircraft scales are 1:32, 1:48 and 1:72; this is in another league. The finished model is 551 mm long with a span of 706.6 mm, that is roughly 55 x 71 cm. It will not fit into a standard display case; it is an exhibition piece for which you have to have the room ready. The kit consists of more than 270 parts including metal components (screws, pins, springs, shafts), decals for a US Navy scheme and a detailed cockpit and landing gear bays. The landing gear can be built down or retracted.
The Douglas SBD Dauntless was an American carrier dive bomber and the key aircraft of the US Navy in the first years of the war in the Pacific. Its distinguishing mark is the perforated dive brakes, surfaces pierced with round holes, which in a diving attack slowed the aircraft enough for it to aim practically vertically and drop its bomb with great accuracy. Its most famous moment came in the battle of Midway in June 1942: in the space of a few minutes the Dauntlesses dealt mortal blows to three Japanese aircraft carriers (Akagi, Kaga and Soryu) and sank the fourth, Hiryu, the same day. A single morning thus broke the Japanese superiority and turned the course of the war in the Pacific; it is among the most significant moments in the history of aviation.
In 1:18 absolutely everything is visible, so it pays to give time to the cockpit interior, which will not hide under the large glazing. The kit has movable flaps, so the characteristic perforated dive brakes can be built in the open position; it is the most striking way to present the model and we recommend it. Work in subassemblies, choose a stronger glue for parts this large and let the joints cure thoroughly. Paint with an airbrush over a primer; large areas in blue-gray naval schemes will benefit from fine modulation of the shade, as otherwise they look flat. Panel lines, salt and scuffed finish at the wing root and restrained exhaust staining will give the model its sense of scale. Reckon with a higher consumption of paint than on an ordinary kit.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
