A transparent base under a large model has two pitfalls. First, everything glued to it is visible, so the joint has to be clean and as small as possible. Second, a large figure on a clear base loses stability more easily, because the weight cannot be hidden under texture. Spreading the contact area of the model over more points and letting the joint cure thoroughly both help.
A clear base when photographing. A transparent area lets light through from below, so different shadows arise on the model than on an opaque base. That can be turned to advantage: a light surface under the base lights the model from beneath and lifts the detail on its lower faces, while a dark one lets the silhouette stand out.
