A mask set for a model of the Japanese battlecruiser Haruna in her 1915 state in 1:700 scale by the manufacturer Kajika. It serves for painting; it is not a model of the ship.
Responsibility details are not available.
This item is not a kit but a set of masks that make painting a finished model easier. The masks cover the surfaces that are to stay in a different shade, typically the transitions between the deck and the side of the hull or sharply bounded waterlines. The advantage over masking tape is that the shape is cut out in advance to the measure of the given ship, so the laborious measuring out on the model falls away.
Haruna was one of the four units of the Japanese Kongo class, a line of fast battlecruisers built in the time before the First World War. The main armament consisted of eight guns of 356 mm in four twin turrets, complemented by a battery of medium guns in casemates. The 1915 state corresponds to the ship shortly after completion, that is with her original silhouette before the later extensive reconstructions.
Stick the masks onto a perfectly dry and degreased finish, otherwise they risk pulling the paint off underneath them when they come off. Press the edges down carefully with a wooden toothpick so that the paint does not creep under them. Spray in thin coats and rather perpendicular to the edge of the mask than at an angle under it. Remove the mask as soon as possible after the last coat has dried, ideally with tweezers and by pulling it back over itself, not straight up. With ships in 1:700 it pays to paint the hull before the fine deck fittings are fitted.
