1:20 Corgi Thor

Corgi Thor, a figure of a dog 1:20 (DEF Model)

A small resin figure of a Welsh Corgi standing, cast in one piece, so there is no gluing or fitting of parts. The master was created by digital sculpting and printing, thanks to which the casting has cleanly suggested fur, an expression and small things such as the collar. In 1:20 scale it suits large figures, models of cars and motorcycles in similar scales, and civilian scenes where an animal is exactly what gives the scene life and scale. It is not a kit of a dog in the true sense but a finished casting meant to be painted. It is made by the Korean firm DEF Model.

The real subject

The Welsh Corgi is a low-set herding breed from Wales, recognizable by its long back, short strong legs, large upright ears and fox-like head. Those proportions are what define the figure, and in a small scale they are easily lost if the casting is coarse. Animals are among the rewarding elements in diorama work: they direct the viewer's eye and break up the austerity of a technical scene.

Building and painting tips

Wash the casting in warm soapy water and remove the remains of the casting block under the paws; level the surface so that the figure stands. Lay down a thin primer. The fur looks best if you lighten the base rust or sand color with a dry brush along the lie of the coat and paint the white markings on the chest and muzzle in by hand with a brush. Pick out the eyes and the nose with a dark color and finish them with a drop of gloss clear, which gives them a wet shine. Leave a flat coat on the rest of the body.
