A Formula 1 driver sits in the cockpit surrounded by machinery, but it is he who gives the whole build scale. Without a figure a model of a racing special is only a machine; as soon as a person stands by it or sits in it, the viewer sees at once how low and narrow a single-seater really is. The driver's gear is a rewarding subject in itself: a multi-layer fireproof race suit, a helmet with a visor, gloves and boots with a thin sole. The 1:20 scale is established on kits of single-seaters, so the figure will meet the usual range of Formula models.
This is a driver character in its own right, marked within the line with the letter B, which sets the individual forms apart. It comes into play on a model of a single-seater, in a diorama of a pit lane and on its own in a display case beside a finished car.
Cut the excess material off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder down, then wash and degrease the figure so that the paint holds. Choose the glue according to the material of the parts. When painting, work from the top down: the face and the hands first, then the race suit and the small details last. Apply a base shade to the skin, add a thin wash into the shadows under the chin and into the eye sockets, and lighten the raised places slightly. The helmet can take a gloss varnish and the visor a dark transparent shade; it is exactly the gloss that will set it apart from the matte race suit. Patches and logos on the race suit can be suggested with a fine brush.
