A detailing accessory from the Japanese brand Top Studio for models of Formula 1 cars in 1:20 scale. It is not a kit, but a set of photo-etched clamps for fitting one particular assembly of a model: the joints of the exhaust pipes and their mounting to the engine and the frame.
Why clamps in particular
The exhaust headers of a racing car are made up of several segments held together by metal collars. On a plastic kit these collars tend to be molded only as a shallow relief, or they are missing entirely. On Formula 1 cars, meanwhile, the exhaust is often exposed and it is one of the first places the eye goes to. Thin photo-etch gives a joint a sharp edge and a visible thickness that plastic cannot imitate.
Nip the parts out with a sharp scalpel against a hard base and deburr the remainders of the tabs carefully with a fine file. Bend the clamp step by step around the pipe itself, so that it follows its diameter; a rough grip with pliers will deform the photo-etch. It is bonded with super glue applied in a minute amount. In terms of color it works well to leave the clamp in a different shade from the pipe, because on a real car it is a different material too. The exhaust is a rewarding place for a patina: apply the heat discoloration and the soot right at the end, once the base color has dried.
