An airliner Boeing 737-800 in the colors of the Japanese company Skymark Airlines. A small kit for 1:200 scale, ideal for a single weekend.
Responsibility details are not available.
Skymark Airlines came about in the mid-1990s as the first new Japanese scheduled carrier after long decades and set itself against the pair of established airlines. It bet on a simple recipe: a single type of aircraft, dense traffic out of Tokyo Haneda airport and lower fares. The Boeing 737-800 became the backbone of the fleet and its restrained white finish with blue lettering is one of the readily recognizable sights on Japanese aprons.
This is the opposite pole of modeling demands from the big combat aircraft. In 1:200 scale the finished piece measures about twenty centimeters and the whole assembly consists of only a few main parts: two fuselage halves, the wings, the tail surfaces, the engine nacelles and the landing gear. Gluing and cleaning up can be managed in a single afternoon. The rest of the weekend goes on the surface finish, which is the more interesting half of the work here.
Airliners are built for their glossy surface, and that is exactly what forgives the least. A white finish needs an even base, because any scratch or unsanded seam will show through it. Lay on thin coats, let them dry thoroughly and only then move on to the decals, which make up most of the final look. Anyone who wants the model perfect will add one more layer of gloss clear coat after the decals, so that the edges disappear. The result is then a display piece gained in a fraction of the time that large kits swallow.
