About product

USS Curtis Wilbur DDG-54 in 1:200 scale from I Love Kit

An injection-molded plastic model of the American guided missile destroyer USS Curtis Wilbur with hull number DDG-54 in 1:200 scale. For modern warships, 1:200 is the largest scale commonly available and means a model almost a meter long, so think out the room in a cabinet and the method of mounting in advance. The detail of the superstructure, the radars and the armament is legible without a magnifier.

The real subject

USS Curtis Wilbur belongs to the Arleigh Burke class, the most numerous class of guided missile destroyers of the US Navy. She is a ship of the first batch, recognizable in that she has no hangar for a helicopter behind the flight deck. The ship's key capability is the Aegis combat system with large flat radar antennas built into the superstructure and the vertical launch cells from which the ship fires anti-aircraft missiles and missiles against land targets alike. A 127 mm gun on the bow completes them. Curtis Wilbur served from the middle of the 1990s and spent a large part of her career at a forward base in Japan.

Building and painting tips

On a ship of this size it pays to proceed in sections: finish and paint the hull first and only then fit the superstructure and the fine deck equipment. Photo-etched railings and ladders are not a matter of course in every package, but they are what makes the greatest difference on a model of a warship. Lay the gray of the hull and superstructure on with an airbrush in thin coats and work with gentle shading of the individual surfaces, or a large model will flatten out visually. Think out in advance whether you want the ship on the water or the whole hull on a stand, because the preparation of the lower part follows from it.

Who the model is for

  • for collectors of modern warships in a large scale
  • for modelers who want a model as the centerpiece of a display
  • for those interested in the US Navy and the Aegis system
  • for more experienced builders with the facilities for a large project

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The real ship measures over 150 meters, so a model in 1:200 scale comes out at just under a meter in length. Allow for that when choosing a place in a cabinet.

Ships of the first batch have no hangar for a helicopter behind the flight deck. A helicopter can land on them, but it cannot be maintained on board for long.

The complete contents of the package are stated on the box and in the instructions with the kit.
