A set from the Basic Line range of the manufacturer HGW for models of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter in the E-4 and E-7 versions in 1:72 scale. The set belongs among masks and serves during the painting of a fully glued airframe — above all so that the frames of the glazed canopy come out sharp and evenly wide. It is not a kit but an accessory for a model.
The E-4 and E-7 versions belonged to the later series of the E range with the Daimler-Benz DB 601 engine. The E-4 differed from the earlier machines among other things in the revised shape of the glazing over the pilot's head and in changes to the armor of the cockpit. The E-7 received a rack under the fuselage, which made it possible to carry a drop tank and so extend the range. What matters for a modeler is that both versions have heavily divided, angular glazing, and masking it by hand in a small scale is a lengthy business.
Wash and degrease the surface before applying the masks. Lift the parts with tweezers one at a time and press the edges down carefully with a wooden stick, so that paint cannot seep underneath. Spray in several very thin coats; one heavy coat will create a step along the edge. Take the mask off while the paint has only just set, slowly and folding it back over itself. It is advisable to spray the canopy frames with the interior shade first and only then with the exterior shade, so that the transition looks natural when seen from inside as well.
