About product

A mantlet with a canvas cover and a barrel for the A34 Comet - the Second World War form, 1:35

This item is an accessory to a kit, not a model of a tank. In one set there is the gun mantlet with its canvas cover and the barrel of the 77 mm OQF gun. The barrel replaces the plastic part with its lengthwise mold parting line and is straight and stiff enough to carry its own weight, so it does not sag even after a long time in a display case. The mantlet is a single casting, so gluing two halves together and then restoring the surface rubbed away in the process both fall away.

The real subject

The A34 Comet was a British cruiser tank deployed in the closing phase of the Second World War. Against the older British types it brought markedly more effective armament: a 77 mm gun of the HV type, listed in British nomenclature as Ordnance Quick Firing, that is OQF. It was a weapon derived from the 17-pounder gun, modified so as to fit into the turret of a tank. Canvas mantlet covers were used on vehicles to seal the moving part of the turret and their shape changed over time: this set is designated as the Second World War form, and the manufacturer makes the postwar variant separately.

Fitting and painting tips

Wash the resin casting in lukewarm water with detergent, cut the casting block off with a saw and level the mating surface on abrasive paper on a flat board. Degrease the metal barrel with alcohol. It is glued with cyanoacrylate. Try the seating dry, so that the barrel points along the axis of the turret. The canvas cover benefits from a dark wash into the folds and a fine lightening of the high points, so that the fabric is set apart visually from the armor around it.

Who the set is for

  • builders of Comets of the Second World War period in 1:35 scale
  • modelers who want the right shape of cover for the period
  • those bothered by the mold parting line on the barrel and on the mantlet
  • more experienced builders used to working with resin
