Single-sided painting mask for the Tornado IDS in 1:32 scale

A self-adhesive mask cut to shape that is applied directly onto the clear part. The single-sided version allows for masking the outside of the glazing. The Tornado cockpit is long and seats two, so even here it is a noticeable saving of time compared with cutting tape. The set is meant for the IDS version; the maker also offers a GR.4 version separately, which is the modernized British variant. Watch the difference between them against the kit you are building. The cut is worked out for the Italeri kit.

The real subject

The Panavia Tornado is a twin-engine two-seat combat aircraft with a variable geometry wing, which came about in an international program of Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom. The IDS version is meant for strikes on ground targets and for penetrating to the target at low level, which the terrain-following equipment matches. The swing wing allows both a slow takeoff and a fast dash and is at the same time the feature that makes the Tornado a characteristic type. Besides the IDS there are also versions for suppressing air defense and for reconnaissance.

Masking tips

Wash and degrease the clear part so that the mask holds. Once it is applied, run a toothpick along the edges, especially on the rounded bubble of the canopy. Spray thin coats. The matte dark anti-glare panel in front of the cockpit is a prominent feature on modern combat aircraft; it is laid down first and then masked over, or the other way round, depending on the shade chosen. If the set does not hold one, cut your own tape for it along the engraved lines. Take the mask off while the paint has only just dried.
