About product

British paratrooper of Operation Market Garden, a 1:10 bust from Young Miniatures

The bust captures a British paratrooper of Operation Market Garden in the autumn of 1944, in 1:10 scale. It is not a whole figure but a bust; with busts this scale is the usual one and it gives room to work out the face, the texture of the cloth and the small items of equipment. Young Miniatures has long devoted itself to historical busts and wartime subjects are a firm part of its range.

The real subject

Operation Market Garden ran from 17 to 25 September 1944 in the Netherlands and was the largest Allied airborne operation in Europe. The aim was to take a run of bridges and open the road into Germany; the hardest task fell to the British 1st Airborne Division at Arnhem, where the fighting dragged on and the operation in the end did not reach its main objective. British paratroopers of the time wore the Denison camouflage smock over their battledress, a brimless steel helmet designed specially for jumping, 1937 Pattern webbing and pouches, and often the Sten submachine gun as a personal weapon. The characteristic maroon beret belonged to their dress out of action and became a symbol of these units. Arnhem remains to this day among the strongest subjects of military modeling, precisely because it brings together an elite unit and a very hard course of fighting.

Painting tips

A large scale puts the face and the cloth to the fore. Start with a filler primer, then build the skin in oils or in acrylic in thin layers and give yourself time for the transitions, because in 1:10 every break shows. Paint the camouflage pattern of the Denison smock from the top down: first the ground tone, then soft patches, and leave the edges blurred so that the pattern looks like dyed cloth rather than drawing. The helmet and the webbing should be muted; let a wash into the folds and lighten the high points gently. At the end even the surface out with a matte coat and leave the sheen only on metal, leather and in the eyes.

Who the bust is for

  • Figure painters with an interest in the Second World War
  • Collectors of subjects from Operation Market Garden and the fighting at Arnhem
  • Modelers who want to try painting a camouflage pattern in a large scale
  • More experienced painters used to working with skin and transitions

FAQ

No. It is a bust, that is the head and chest. With busts 1:10 is the usual scale and it gives a lot of room for painting.

Rather for the more advanced. In a large scale every inaccuracy shows on the face and on the camouflage pattern.
