In a large format the head decides the impression the whole figure makes. The viewer looks at it first and only then notices the rest. It therefore pays to start right there and to give the face more time than everything else put together. The hands come second, because they tend to be in motion and draw the eye. The rest of the figure can stay more restrained without any harm to the whole.
With civilian clothing it works well to choose muted, slightly faded tones. A saturated color straight from the bottle looks hard in a small format, so lighten it with a drop of beige or gray. Bring out the folds of the fabric with a glaze a shade darker and run a lighter tone lightly over the raised areas. Seams and buttons only need to be suggested; detail drawn out too far tends to break the result up.
