A widely straddled four-spoke wheel comes across quite differently depending on what is shod on it. A narrow tire with a tall side moves a car into the seventies and gives it lightness, while a low and wide one presses it to the ground instead. That is exactly why it makes sense to take the rim and the rubber as one whole: only their ratio decides whether a finished model looks like the sporting version of a series car or like a special prepared for the start.
The set will serve well in building a competition or circuit French car, where you want to deal with all four corners quickly and without compromises. It will find use with a conversion in which you are adding wider arches to a series car as well, because it is then that you need a wheel whose width matches the new body. Previous experience with accessory wheels is not a condition, but at least an idea of how high the car should stand comes in useful.
What is critical is the seating of the wheel in relation to the arch. A model standing too high looks like an illustration in a spare-parts manual, and one too low like a toy instead. Before you glue anything, stand the model on a flat board and look at it at eye level, not from above. A difference of one millimeter is unexpectedly easy to see in this scale.
Leave the outer ring of the rim lighter than the center, and add fine scores from a tire iron around the circumference. The side of the rubber needs a matte, slightly dusty tone; a glossy tire gives a model away from a distance. Finally, check that all four wheels touch the surface at the same time, otherwise all the work will come to nothing.
