The Lexus LS 400 was introduced at the end of the 1980s as the first model of an entirely new marque that Toyota founded for the top segment. Under the hood sat a four-liter V8, but the main argument for the car was not power: it was refinement. The car set the bar for quietness of running, build quality and reliability so high that it forced the established European rivals to reconsider their own flagships. On the Japanese home market the same car was sold under a different name. Today the LS 400 is among the recognized modern classics.
