About product

Subaru 360, Suzuka 500 km 1966, in 1:24 scale from Hasegawa

A plastic kit of the tiny Japanese Subaru 360 car in the form in which it started in the endurance race at the Suzuka circuit in 1966. The Japanese manufacturer Hasegawa makes the Subaru 360 in several boxings, and this is the racing variant completed with decals carrying the starting numbers and period lettering. It is an injection-molded plastic kit in 1:24 scale, supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The Subaru 360 was the Subaru brand's first production passenger car and was produced from the end of the nineteen-fifties. It belonged to the Japanese kei tax category — that is, to the class of the smallest cars with strictly limited dimensions and engine capacity. An air-cooled two-cylinder two-stroke engine of 356 cubic centimeters mounted at the rear drove the rear wheels, and the body with its rounded shapes and divided side windows earned the car a nickname at home after the ladybug. It was precisely its lightness and simplicity that made it a popular machine for amateur racing: at long endurance events small cars ran in classes of their own, where it was mainly about reliability and about losing as little time as possible in the pits.

Building and painting tips

A small car forgives fewer mistakes than a large body — every over-sanded edge shows. Clean the mold parting lines up carefully, spray the body with primer and apply the paint in thin layers, so that the fine pressings are not lost. You will manage the chrome trim and the window frames with metallic paint from a brush or with a thin strip of adhesive foil. Seat the decals on a glossy surface with a decal softener and overcoat them once dry. The interior of a small car is clearly visible through the large area of the windows, so it pays to tell the seats, the dashboard and the steering wheel apart in color.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Japanese kei class cars and historic youngtimers
  • Modelers who want a quick and good-looking build in a smaller format
  • Fans of the history of the Suzuka circuit and of Japanese endurance racing
  • Builders of period scenes from a paddock or the pits of the nineteen-sixties

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the Japanese tax and legislative category of the smallest automobiles with limited dimensions and engine capacity. The Subaru 360 belonged to it with its two-cylinder engine of 356 cubic centimeters.

Yes. The real subject was very short, so the model in 1:24 scale comes out markedly smaller than an ordinary car of the same scale. It will fit into a display case even beside larger models.

It is not a condition. A small body can be sprayed decently with paint from a can as well; what matters is applying it in thin layers and letting it dry between them.
