An injection-molded plastic kit of the small Japanese Subaru 360 in the version with an opening fabric roof. The model comes from the Japanese maker Hasegawa, which has covered this car in several boxings differing in equipment, model year and accessories. The package contents, the number of parts and the extent of the decal sheet are given in the instructions in the box.
The Subaru 360 was the brand's first series passenger car and one of the key representatives of the Japanese smallest-car category. It was built from the end of the 1950s to the turn of the 1960s and 1970s and was powered by a rear-mounted air-cooled two-cylinder two-stroke engine of around 360 cubic centimeters, which was the legal ceiling of that class at the time. The unitary body was tuned for the lowest possible weight, and thanks to its rounded shape the car earned a nickname in Japan referring to a ladybug. The form with a long roll-back fabric roof offered an inexpensive way to enjoy open-air driving without having to reinforce the body in complicated ways. The little car became a symbol of Japanese postwar motorization.
A small model forgives little, as minor unevenness is conspicuous over a small area, so do not underrate the sanding and the primer. The fabric roof deserves a different surface from the body; a matte or satin varnish and a fine dark wash into the folds give the textile believability. Handle the chrome frames and trim with foil or a polishable metallic paint, as a brush is difficult on small parts. The interior is clearly visible thanks to the large windows, so it pays to set the shade of the seats apart from the dashboard. If you build the model for a display case beside larger cars, the comparison of sizes is a pleasure in itself and characterizes the real subject well.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
