About product

Toyota RN30 Hilux Custom - a kit 1:24 (Aoshima)

An injection-molded plastic kit of a light commercial pickup in 1:24 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Aoshima. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The number of parts, the extent of the decals and the contents of the package are given on the box and in the instructions. The word Custom in the name refers to the better equipped form of the real subject, and the year to the model period the set relates to.

The real subject

The Hilux is a range of light pickups Toyota has built since the end of the 1960s and which earned a reputation as an exceptionally tough working vehicle. The form designated RN30 belongs to the generation introduced at the end of the 1970s and is the variant with a shorter wheelbase and a gasoline inline four. The design is classic commercial, that is a ladder frame, a live rear axle with leaf springs and a separate bed. The Custom trim level added better upholstery and external decorative features over the bare working version, so the vehicle could already be used as a passenger car too. It is precisely that combination of simple engineering and decent equipment that makes the pickups of the day a popular subject for modifications.

Building and painting tips

With a commercial vehicle you do not have to go for a perfect piano gloss. A lower sheen looks more natural on a working pickup and forgives small imperfections in the finish. The chassis and the bed are more interesting instead. Paint and build in the frame and the axles before you close the body up; on a pickup a lot is visible from below. The floor of the bed can be varied with darker patches and fine pigment so that it looks used. Do the chrome bumpers and strips with metal foil; chrome paint on large areas never looks as good. The interior is simple, and all the more reason to spend time on the instrument panel and the steering wheel. Glue the glazing with cement for clear plastic. If you want to build the vehicle as modified, a two-tone finish on the body suggests itself with this subject and is fairly easy to mask thanks to the straight lines.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Japanese commercial vehicles in 1:24 scale
  • Modelers who want to build a pickup with room for modifications
  • Anyone interested in 1970s vehicles and youngtimers
  • Builders who enjoy working with a chassis and with weathering

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the name of a trim level of the real subject. Against the basic working version it had better upholstery and more external decorative features.

On pickups of this class the bed tends to be separate from the cab already on the real vehicle. How it is handled in the kit can be checked in the instructions, so test the parts dry.

You do not. On a working pickup a satin surface and some light weathering look more natural. A high gloss suits a collector's form more.

The structure of a commercial vehicle is simpler than that of a sports coupe and the finish need not be perfectly deep, so it is a fairly friendly subject for a first car model.
