About product

StuG III G late version idler wheels, type 2, for the Rye Field Model kit

This is an add-on set, not a model. It replaces the idler wheels, that is, the rear guide wheels of the track, that the kit is equipped with out of the box. The idler wheel is one of the details that stay in plain sight on a finished vehicle, so its shape and surface noticeably affect the overall impression. This item carries the type 2 version used on late StuG III Ausf. G machines and is prepared for the StuG III G kit by Rye Field Model. Variants with another type of wheel and versions for kits of other brands are made by the manufacturer as separate items, so watch both when choosing.

The real subject

The StuG III was a German assault gun on the chassis of the Panzer III tank. It came about as infantry support, but as the war went on it increasingly filled the role of a tank destroyer and became one of the most numerously produced German tracked vehicles. The Ausf. G version is the last and the most widespread production variant, and in the course of production it went through many modifications, among them in the running gear. The late machines therefore differ in detail from the early ones, and modelers who want to capture a particular period will reach for the matching parts.

Building tips

First fit the wheels dry and check the spacing and the axle. Before gluing, wash them in warm soapy water. Finish and paint the running gear and the tracks before the side skirts cover them; afterwards you will reach them only with difficulty. Dirt builds up on an idler wheel above all at the rim and between the spokes, so lay the pigments on more strongly there. For as long as you can, keep the wheels able to turn; that will make fitting the track easier.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German hardware of the Second World War in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers building a late StuG III Ausf. G
  • Owners of the StuG III G kit by Rye Field Model
  • Those who want a more accurate shape and surface on the running gear

FAQ

It is the rear guide wheel of the track, which keeps its tension. On a model it stays clearly visible, so it pays to give it attention.

These are two versions of the idler wheel used on late StuG III Ausf. G machines. Choose the version according to the documentation for the vehicle you are building.

This version is cut for the kit by Rye Field Model. For another brand the manufacturer offers a matching separate variant.

No. This is a set of idler wheels; the rest of the running gear stays from the kit.
