A set of replacement drive sprockets for the M1 Abrams model in 1:35 scale by T-Rex Studio, prepared for the Tamiya kit. The manufacturer issues the same set in versions for Dragon and for Meng as well. The difference lies precisely in the adaptation to a particular box, so when ordering it pays to check whose tank you are building. T-Rex Studio sets the Active range apart from its older Abrams wheels, which it carries as Old version.
An injection-molded drive sprocket from the box tends to be a compromise between the shape of the real subject and what a mold can do. The teeth are fuller, the cutouts shallower and the parting line runs exactly where the detail is most visible. An accessory set solves the shape afresh and without regard to a parting line, so once the track is on, the engagement of the teeth looks more credible. On the Abrams this matters all the more because the sprocket is at the rear, that is on the side a model is usually turned toward at a show.
First try the parts dry on the axle and check the sag of the track, and only then glue. The glue matches the material: plastic parts take liquid cement, resin calls for cyanoacrylate, and it is good to degrease the joint first. Painting is more comfortable before the tracks go on, as the sprocket can then be painted from all sides. Dust from desert service can be suggested with a light pigment settled in the recesses of the ring, and the metallic sheen belongs only on the edges of the teeth.
