The Art Scale 1:32 A5M4 Claude double-sided mask set is a set of pre-cut masks for spraying the clear parts of a model of the Japanese carrier-borne fighter. It is not a kit but an accessory for the build. Intended for the Special Hobby kit.

The set contains masks cut to the outline of the clear parts of the Mitsubishi A5M4 model in 1:32 scale. The model is not in the package; this is an aid for painting. The shapes are cut for the Special Hobby kit, so they line up with the engraving and there is no need to trim tape with a knife right on the part. Double-sided means that the set allows for masking from the outside and from the inside. On this type the masking is all the more delicate because the glazing is small and the frames are narrow, so hand-cut tape will not forgive a mistake.
The real subject
The Mitsubishi A5M, known to the Allies as Claude, was the first monoplane carrier fighter of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service. It had fixed landing gear with streamlined wheel spats, a radial engine and very clean aerodynamics, which made it agile and fast for its day. The A5M4 was the last large-production variant, with a more powerful engine and the option of carrying a drop tank.
Wash and degrease the clear part. Lift the masks off the sheet with a point or tweezers and set them so that the edge lines up exactly with the engraved frame; press from the center outward so that no air stays trapped underneath. Press the edges down once more with a toothpick. Spray in thin coats and in several passes, otherwise the paint film tears when you lift the mask. The usual order is the interior color, then the primer and the exterior shade. Lift the mask once the paint has dried but before it has cured fully, and remove any adhesive residue with a mild product that will not attack clear plastic.
This is a masking accessory for the build, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
