The set contains masks cut to the outline of the clear parts of a model of the AH-1G Cobra attack helicopter in its late production configuration, in 1:32 scale. It is neither a model nor a kit, but an aid for painting: the masks replace trimming masking tape with a knife on the finished part, which is the most time-consuming part of the work on a glazed cockpit with many narrow frames. The single-sided designation means that the set is intended for masking from the outside. Anyone who wants the framing sprayed from inside the cockpit in the interior color as well should reach for the double-sided variant of the same set.
The real subject
The AH-1G Cobra is a single-engine attack helicopter of American manufacture that was created using the drive train and the rotor of the UH-1 helicopter. It is characterized by a narrow fuselage, a tandem cockpit for the pilot and the gunner, short stub wings for the armament and a swiveling turret under the nose. The late production batches differ from the early machines in a number of design details, including the shaping of the glazing.
Wash and degrease the clear part first, otherwise the mask will not hold. Lift the masks off the sheet with a sharp point or tweezers and seat them so that the edge lines up with the engraved frame; press from the center outward so that no air stays under the mask. Then press the edges down once more with a toothpick, because that is exactly where the cleanliness of the edge is decided. Spray thinly and in several passes; a heavy coat peels when the mask is lifted. Lift the mask as soon as the paint has dried to the point where it does not smear but is not yet fully cured. Remove glue residue with a mild product that will not attack clear plastic.
It is a masking accessory for a build, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
