About product

Quickboost 1:32 F-14A/B Tomcat boarding steps

A resin detail accessory from the Quickboost brand, out of the production of the Czech firm Aires, intended for models of the Grumman F-14 Tomcat in the A and B versions in 1:32 scale. It replaces the boarding steps that extended from the airframe on the left side of the forward fuselage and served the crew for getting into the cockpit. In kits these steps tend to be either simplified or merely suggested as an outline, or else molded unusably thick. A resin casting manages a thin wall and a sharp edge, so extended steps look convincing on a large model.

The real subject

The Grumman F-14 Tomcat was a two-seat carrier-borne fighter of the US Navy with a variable-sweep wing. The F-14A version used Pratt & Whitney TF30 engines, whereas the later F-14B received the more powerful and more reliable General Electric F110. Because the Tomcat's cockpit is high above the deck, the aircraft had a system of folding steps and grab handles on the side of the nose; these retracted after start-up, so as not to create drag. On a model standing on a deck or on a stand it is a conspicuous detail that immediately reveals whether the machine is being prepared or is ready for takeoff.

Building and painting tips

Carefully separate the parts from the casting block, best with a thin saw, because the steps are slender and break easily. Wash and degrease them before gluing. Decide whether you will have the steps extended or retracted; extended ones belong to a model with the canopy open, with a ladder at the fuselage and with figures, retracted ones to a machine in flight configuration. Choose the color according to the overall finish of the airframe; the inside of the recesses tends to be more noticeably worn and dirty than the surrounding surfaces, which is worth suggesting with a dark wash and a fine rub of silver.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Tomcat in the A or B versions in 1:32 scale
  • Modelers who build the aircraft as a scene from the deck
  • Those who want to replace coarsely molded steps from the kit
  • Anyone interested in a quick and simple improvement to the detail of the nose

The parts are supplied unassembled and unpainted. It is an accessory, not a complete model. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The F-14's cockpit is high above the ground, so the aircraft had folding steps and grab handles on the side of the forward fuselage for the crew to board by. Before flight they retracted into the airframe.

Yes, the choice is yours. Extended steps suit a model being prepared with an open cockpit, retracted ones a machine in flight configuration.

It is not. It is a separate detail part for a Tomcat kit in 1:32 scale bought separately.
