About product

The air inlet on the vertical tail of the F-4C and F-4D Phantom II, 1:32 scale

This is not an aircraft kit but a separate resin accessory from the Quickboost brand. It replaces the small air inlet placed on the leading edge of the vertical tail, that is exactly the kind of detail that tends to be simplified, blanked off or shifted by the mold parting line in an injection molding. The casting is executed in one piece with an open mouth, so once it is glued on you get a visible duct, which with a simplified plastic part usually has to be laboriously drilled out.

The real subject

The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is a two-seat twin-engine jet aircraft that served with the US Navy and the US Air Force from the start of the 1960s. The F-4C and F-4D versions were intended for the land-based air arm and they differed from the naval machines above all in equipment and systems. The tail section of the airframe carried several smaller inlets and ducts whose shape and position changed between production batches.

Fitting and painting tips

First separate the part from the casting block with a fine-toothed saw and not with nippers, because resin is hard and brittle and tends to chip when it is squeezed. Level the cut with sanding paper on a flat surface. Then wash the whole casting in lukewarm soapy water to remove mold release residue, because without that the paint only seems to hold. Sand the original shape on the plastic part flat, dry fit the accessory, check the angle against the leading edge and only then glue it with super glue. Fill the joint with a thin filler, spray it with filler primer and apply the paint together with the rest of the vertical tail, so that the shade carries on exactly.

Who the accessory is for

  • Modelers building a Phantom in 1:32 scale who want to unify the small shapes on the fin.
  • Builders bothered by blanked-off or merely suggested ducts in plastic.
  • Anyone interested in a quick improvement in detail without cutting into the structure of the model.
  • Those who already have experience of sanding and gluing resin.

The accessory is supplied unpainted and unassembled. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package. It is not a standalone model, because it requires a corresponding kit in 1:32 scale.

FAQ

It is not. This is a separate resin accessory that replaces a single detail on the vertical tail. For the build you need a corresponding Phantom kit in 1:32 scale.

Cyanoacrylate super glue. Classic cement for polystyrene does not dissolve resin, so it does not hold.

Yes. Wash it in lukewarm soapy water because of the mold release residue and then spray it with primer. Without that the paint holds poorly on resin.

Count on sanding the original suggested shape flat and filling any gap. The extent of the work depends on the particular kit.
