A self-adhesive masking set in 1:32 scale for the Tamiya kit of the two-seat F-4C/D Phantom II multi-role fighter. It is not a kit or a set of decals; it is an aid for painting. The masks are stuck onto the clear part exactly along the framing, sprayed together with the surrounding area and lifted off once dry. The single-sided version covers the outer side of the glazing.
The Phantom II was an American twin-engine jet fighter with a crew of two, used in the C and D versions by the US Air Force. The glazing consists of a windscreen and two separate hinged canopies over the two cockpits, each with its own framing. In the large 1:32 scale the frames are wide enough for every imprecise paint transition to show at first glance, and that is the main reason a ready-made mask pays off on this type.
Wash the clear part in lukewarm water with detergent and let it dry; on a greasy surface the mask does not hold and the paint runs under it. Lift the masks out with the tip of a scalpel or with tweezers, lay them on the frame and press them down with a wooden stick all around the perimeter. Where the shape needs finishing up to the edge of the frame, run a fresh blade lightly so that no groove is left in the clear plastic. Spray the paint in thin coats and let them flash off; a single heavy coat will flow under the edge of the mask. The interior shade is usually sprayed first, and the exterior covering color once it is dry. Lift the masks shortly after drying, pulling at an angle along the surface rather than straight up.
The box holds the masking set only. The kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
