On a model the wheels are among the first things the eye registers, and at the same time among those injection-molded plastic handles as a compromise: the parting line of the molds runs exactly across the tread, so once the flash is removed the pattern is lost. A resin casting is by contrast in one piece, with a crisp tread, a defined hub and the full depth of detail of the valve and the brake disc. In 1:32 scale the difference comes into its own fully, because the wheel of a carrier fighter is already a fairly large part here. The manufacturer is the Czech firm Eduard.
The Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet is a single-seat carrier-based multi-role aircraft of the US Navy, which derives from the original Hornet but is markedly larger, with a new wing, more powerful engines and different air intakes. Operation from the deck of an aircraft carrier makes extreme demands on the landing gear: the wheels have to withstand touchdown without a flare and the engagement of an arrestor wire. That is where the sturdy look of the whole landing gear comes from, as well as the pronounced wear of the tires, which is worth suggesting on a model.
First wash the resin parts in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry: mold release agent clings to the surface and paint will not hold on it. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc, never snap them, and level the surface with a file; when sanding resin, work wet or with respiratory protection. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue. Paint the tire in a dark gray rather than pure black, and mask the hub with a circular mask or an accurate brush. A faint touch of dust pigment on the contact area helps at the end.
