The Gloster Gladiator was the last British fighter biplane. The Mk.II differed from the first version mainly in its powerplant and in small modifications to the propeller and the accessories; the aircraft had an enclosed canopy, fixed landing gear and fabric-covered control surfaces. The biplane layout with struts and bracing means that the model is painted in parts and that an airbrush can no longer reach many surfaces once it is assembled, which is exactly why it pays to plan the painting and masking in advance on this subject.
Lay out your sequence before you glue the wings on: paint and mask the upper wing and the interplane struts separately, and only then assemble. Stick the templates onto a fully cured and degreased finish, lay them down dry first and press the whole perimeter down; on fabric ribs and rounded leading edges the edge is exactly the riskiest place for paint to run underneath. Spray thinly and in several layers, and take the mask off soon after the paint has dried, at an obtuse angle. Touch the bracing in with a brush at the very end, so that masks do not have to be handled around it needlessly.
