About product

Hawker Tempest Mk.II 1:32 - an HGW masking set

This item is not a kit of the aircraft. It is a masking set for a model of the British Tempest in the Mk.II version in 1:32 scale. The pre-cut self-adhesive masks are stuck onto the clear parts, the paint is sprayed over them and once they are lifted a crisp boundary stays between the frame and the clear surface.

Mind the choice of version - the Mk.II differs from the most widespread Mk.V version above all in its power installation: the Mk.II had a radial engine, while the Mk.V had the liquid-cooled Napier Sabre H-24 engine. That changes the whole nose of the aircraft and with it which kit the set is intended for. Check which version you are building; the sets of these two versions cannot be interchanged.

The real subject

The Hawker Tempest was a British single-engine fighter that came about by development from the Typhoon type, with a new thinner wing of elliptical plan that improved performance at higher speeds. The Mk.II version was powered by a Bristol Centaurus radial engine and therefore had a completely different nose from the Mk.V version with its liquid-cooled Napier Sabre H-24 engine. This version practically never saw combat use in the Second World War and served mainly in the postwar period, including service with further users outside Britain.

Use and tips

Wash and degrease the clear parts; on a greasy surface a mask does not hold. Move the masks with tweezers and press them down with a blunt point, especially in the corners. Spray thin coats; one heavy coat will leave a step at the edge. Lift the mask off while the paint is dry only to the touch. With British machines it pays to spray the frames first in the shade of the interior and only then in the outer camouflage finish.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building a Tempest Mk.II in 1:32 scale.
  • Those who want crisp cockpit frames without cutting tape by hand.
  • Builders of British aircraft of the late war and the postwar period.
  • Modelers working with an airbrush in a large scale.

The masks are an accessory for a kit. The kit itself and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Above all in its power installation. The Mk.II had a radial engine, the Mk.V the liquid-cooled Napier Sabre H-24 engine. The whole nose of the aircraft differs with that, and the sets for the two versions cannot be interchanged.

No. It is a masking set, an accessory for a kit. A Tempest kit in 1:32 scale has to be obtained separately.

Degrease the part, press the mask down well and spray several thin coats. Lift the mask off while the paint is not yet fully cured.

The masks are cut to the shapes of a particular kit. So check the compatibility against the model you are building.
