About product

Kawasaki Ki-61-I Hien - landing gear bay masks 1:32

A masking set for a model of the Japanese Kawasaki Ki-61-I Hien fighter in 1:32 scale. These are not parts to be glued, nor an accessory that would be visible on the model: they are self-adhesive templates cut to the shape of the landing gear bays. Their only task is to cover the inside of a bay at the moment the outer surface of the model is sprayed.

Masking sets the order of the whole build

The inside of a landing gear bay almost always has a different shade on a model than the outer surfaces of the airframe. From that follows a fixed order of work: first the interior of the bay is sprayed, it is left to dry thoroughly, then it is covered with the mask, and only then does the top coat of the whole aircraft come up. Anyone who does not plan that sequence out in advance ends up with a finished airframe and an unfinished bay, and painting it then means working with a brush in the shelter of the gear doors.

With the Ki-61 that ties in with one more thing. The Hien was unusual among Japanese fighters for its liquid-cooled inverted V12 engine and its slender, aerodynamically clean fuselage; the wing is thin and the bays in it are not at all roomy. All the more reason to have them painted and closed off before the wing is joined to the fuselage.

How to work with the mask

Lay the template on dry, check that it sits on the edge of the opening, and only then press it down. The most important thing is the perimeter: a finger does not reach into the depth of the part, so press the edges down with a toothpick or the blunt tip of a pair of tweezers. Spray at rather lower pressure and from the edge toward the center, so that the paint is not driven under the edge of the mask. Once the varnish has set, take the mask off while the layer is still flexible; the edge tears off dried paint.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want the bay in a different shade without laborious brush touching up
  • Builders in a large scale, where the bay is clearly visible even once the model is finished
  • Those who build the Hien with the gear down and the bays open
  • Everyone who wants to save themselves repairs to an oversprayed interior

FAQ

Only after the interior of the bay has been sprayed and has dried, and before the top coat of the airframe is sprayed. Ideally before the wing is joined to the fuselage, because access to the bay is better then.

A bay is a deep part with sharp corners. Brush touching up in the depth leaves visible strokes and cannot produce a clean boundary between the interior shade and the outer finish, which a mask holds by itself.

No. The templates are cut to the shape of a particular bay, so on another type or in another scale they will not sit on the edge of the opening.

Once the varnish has set, while the layer is still flexible. From fully cured paint the edge can tear when it is lifted.
