Masking set for the Japanese Nakajima Ki-44 interceptor in 1:32 scale. It contains shapes for the canopy from the outer and the inner face and two insignia motifs.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Nakajima Ki-44 Shoki was designed against the Japanese school of light, agile fighters of the day. Its designers sacrificed wing area and endurance in favor of climb and speed, so what arose was a machine with high wing loading suited to intercepting bombers, not to turning in a close-in fight. Pilots had to get used to a landing speed they were not used to on home-grown types. These machines then defended industrial targets over the home islands.
The pair of masks for the canopy is not a luxury. On the real aircraft the frames between the glass and the skin were painted from both sides and each side had a different color. Anyone who sprays only the outer face will see bare clear plastic from the inside once the tape comes off, and the frame will optically disappear, because light passes through it. With an inner mask the frame gains body and the cockpit starts to look like a structure rather than a plastic bubble.
Two canopy masks are stated, that is for both faces, and two masks for the national insignia. The cut shapes sit on the edge of the frame, so there is no need to trim tape with a scalpel directly on the part, which easily scores the transparent plastic.
