The Brengun 1:72 plastic kit of the North American Mustang Mk I captures the first production version with the Allison engine, deployed with British reconnaissance units.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale capturing the Mustang Mk I — the first production version of this fighter, delivered to the Royal Air Force. It differs markedly from the later, better-known Mustangs in the shape of the nose as well as the cockpit, so in a display case it makes an interesting counterpart to the later renderings.
The Mustang Mk I had an Allison V-1710 engine with a single-stage supercharger. That gave it excellent performance near the ground, but at great altitudes it lost markedly, and so it did not become a high-altitude fighter. The Royal Air Force assigned it to units cooperating with the ground forces: it flew high-speed reconnaissance and armed patrol flights over the occupied coast, that is tasks at low level where its strengths came out. The recognition feature of the version is the oblique camera window behind the cockpit and the framed canopy. The armament consisted of machine guns of two calibers, 12.7 mm and 7.7 mm.
The most important thing is the cleanliness of the fuselage joints and the exact angle of incidence of the wings — check it from the rear against the light before the glue dries. Finish the cockpit before you close the fuselage, and do not forget to mask the oblique camera window. British camouflage with hard transitions is best done with masking tape or putty, while for soft transitions a low pressure and a close nozzle distance help. Under the decals, apply a gloss compatible with the paint used; the real subject often carried stripes and pronounced insignia.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
