Technical stencils are everywhere on a real aircraft: warnings around the intakes, the marking of filler points, instructions for the ground crew, panel numbers. A kit usually offers only a fraction of them, because its decal sheet has above all to cover the national insignia and the color schemes. This sheet supplies exactly that missing layer for a model of the F-35A in 1:32 scale. It is not a model and not a part of one but an accessory.
The difference is unexpectedly large. A model with a bare surface looks like a toy even when it is perfectly sprayed. As soon as a dense network of small markings appears on the surfaces, the eye immediately begins to read the scale and the surface gains depth. On an aircraft with low observability that goes double, because its gray finish is otherwise monotonous and the markings are often the only contrast on it.
The F-35A is the basic version with conventional takeoff and landing from an ordinary runway, that is the variant acquired by most air forces. You can tell it from the naval versions by the absence of a lift fan and by a smaller wing area, and unlike them it also carries a cannon inside the fuselage.
The markings are small, so it pays to work with fine-tipped tweezers and good light. The base has to be gloss, otherwise a white haze appears under the film. Work in small groups and let each one become tacky, so that the neighboring decal is not pushed out of place. Finally even the surface out with a matte or satin clear according to the finish of the rest of the model.
