The set from Eduard's SPACE range is neither a model nor a part of one, but an add-on with which the interior of the F-35B fighter is finished out in 1:32 scale. The SPACE range builds on decals printed in layers: the surface has genuine three-dimensional relief and color, so the laborious brush painting of small displays and lettering falls away. On the cockpit sets of this range the decals usually come with steel photo-etched belts for the seat.
The cockpit of a fifth-generation aircraft looks different from that of older machines. Instead of a dense field of round dials it is dominated by one large panoramic touchscreen, and the area around it is fairly plain. That is precisely why the instrument panel is very much on show on the model and every inaccuracy jars. Color printing with relief solves that problem more convincingly than hand painting, and all the more so in 1:32 scale, where the cockpit is large and an open canopy simply invites itself.
The F-35B is the version with short take-off and vertical landing. Its recognition features are the lift fan behind the cockpit and the swiveling engine nozzle, thanks to which the aircraft operates from short strips and from the decks of smaller ships. It is operated by the US Marine Corps, by the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy and by other users.
Leave the surface under the decals smooth and glossy so that the film does not lift anywhere at the edges. Moisten only the backing paper with a sponge, lift the part off with tweezers and seat it in a drop of PVA glue (white glue). Do not use a decal softener or setting solution — the chemicals attack the printed resin and ruin the part. Once it is dry, flatten the surroundings so that the sheen of the film does not stand out from the rest of the cockpit.
