Landing gear bay masks for the Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate in 1:32 scale. The ready-made shapes replace cutting tape by hand and make sure the left and the right bay look the same.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of masks for the landing gear bays of a Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate model in 1:32 scale. The masks close off the openings of the bays while the outside of the airframe is painted and are removed once it is finished.
What a ready-made cut adds
A bay can be masked with tape too, but in a large scale that means ten minutes of trimming for each side and the result almost never comes out exactly right. Ready-made shapes remove that part of the work and above all make it uniform: both bays get the same edge, so the model does not look hand-corrected when seen from below. The time saved comes in useful where it really is needed, on the painting and shading of the bay interior itself.
The Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate was among the best-performing Japanese army fighters of the late war period. It combined a powerful radial engine with good rate of climb and solid armament. In 1:32 scale it is a model of large surfaces on which even the usually overlooked parts stand out, such as the landing gear bays and the inner faces of the doors.
Spray the bay first and deal with the shading straight away; once it is masked, you will not get at anything. Then insert the mask with dry, clean hands and press it down all the way around; a corner that is not pressed down is the only place paint gets inside. If you still varnish and weather the model after the camouflage, leave the masks in place until the last coat of varnish, not just until the end of the camouflage. Remove them by pulling along the surface.
