About product

Art Scale 1:32 P-40M Warhawk masking set, double-sided

A self-adhesive masking set in 1:32 scale intended for the plastic model of the Curtiss P-40M Warhawk fighter from the Hasegawa and Hobby 2000 kits. It is neither a kit nor a set of detail parts; it is purely an aid for painting. The masks are shaped to match the framing of the glazing, they adhere to the clear part and are lifted off after spraying, so the glass stays clean and the framing gets a precise, sharp edge. The double-sided version means that the set allows for both the outer and the inner side of the clear parts, so the frames can also be painted as seen looking out from the cockpit.

The real subject

The P-40 was an American single-engine fighter with a liquid-cooled V12 engine and a prominent radiator duct under the nose. The M version was among the later batches with a lengthened fuselage and was also delivered to Allied operators, where it was used under the designation Kittyhawk. The cockpit is framed into several panes, so hand taping takes a great deal of time and a mask saves more work here than any other accessory.

How to work with the masks

Wash the clear part first in lukewarm water with detergent and let it dry thoroughly; on a greasy surface the mask holds badly and the paint runs under it. Lift the individual masks out with the tip of a scalpel or sharp tweezers, seat them exactly on the frame and press them down with a wooden stick or a toothpick, above all around the perimeter. Where the shape needs finishing, run a fresh blade lightly and precisely along the edge of the frame so that the clear plastic is not scratched. Spray the paint in thin coats; a single heavy coat will flow under the edge of the mask and blur the line. The recommended procedure is the interior shade first and, once dry, the covering coat of the exterior camouflage. Lift the masks shortly after the paint has dried, pulling at an angle to the surface rather than straight up.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the P-40M in 1:32 scale who want clean glazing without laborious taping
  • Those who want the frames visible from inside the cockpit painted as well
  • Beginners for whom masking with tape takes the most time
  • Experienced modelers who want a sharp and even edge on the framing in a large scale

The box holds the masking set only. The kit, paints, glue and decals are not included, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a separate masking set for painting the glazing. The kit, the paints and an airbrush have to be bought separately.

The double-sided one allows for both the outer and the inner side of the clear parts, so the frames visible from inside the cockpit can be painted as well. The single-sided one deals only with the outer side.

Shortly after the paint has dried. If a mask stays on the model for a long time it comes off less easily and may leave glue residue behind.

No, count on a single use. Once lifted they lose both their shape and their tack.
