The P-51D is the most widespread version of the American Mustang, recognizable by its bubble canopy with the lowered spine of the fuselage. On it the exhaust stacks run out in a row on both sides of the nose immediately behind the propeller, and they are among the most conspicuous small parts of the whole aircraft; the eye slides over them every time a model is looked at from the side. On the real machine, moreover, traces of exhaust gases always cling around them and stream back along the side of the fuselage.
This is an accessory set in 1:32 scale that replaces the exhaust parts from a kit. How many parts it holds and which kit it is drawn for are given in the manufacturer's instructions supplied with it. The parts are not made of polystyrene, so they are joined with super glue. In 1:32 scale a model is big enough for the shape of the openings to be noticed on the exhausts, so work on this detail pays off.
Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the rest back; with small parts it helps to work over a tray with a raised edge, so that a part does not disappear. Wash and degrease them before painting. Exhausts are painted in dark metallic tones with a hint of rust, and toward the ends of the stacks it suits to add a lighter ashy tint. Once the model is finished, run a fine spray of a soiled shade back from the exhausts, so that the exhaust stain carries over onto the surrounding surface.
The accessory set is supplied on its own. The kit, the paints and the glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
