Stencils for spraying the national insignia and the canopy frames of the Me 163 B Komet rocket fighter in 1:32 scale, prepared for the kit from Meng.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Komet was the only rocket fighter to reach combat units in the Second World War. A tailless wing, a take-off dolly jettisoned after lift-off and a landing on a retractable skid made it a machine unlike anything else. The Walter engine was driven by a pair of furiously reactive liquids whose leaks threatened the pilot more than enemy fire. The duration of powered flight was counted in minutes, after which the Komet came back as a glider.
The cut self-adhesive parts cover both the frames of the cockpit glazing and the outlines of the national insignia. The pattern is based on a particular kit in 1:32 scale, so the shapes fit the given shape of the canopy without any further trimming.
A cross or a number laid on with paint through a stencil lies directly in the finish and has no carrier film of its own. That does away with the glossy outline which gives away the edge of a decal even after a softener, and the surface stays uniform once it has been given a matte coat. In a large scale, where the markings are big, the difference is clearly visible.
Accuracy has its limits here too. A marking laid on with paint cannot be moved once it has dried, so placing the stencil is an irreversible decision and is measured out beforehand. With the cockpit frames what matters is that the film follows the edge of the glazing without being stretched, otherwise the width of the frame will go out around the perimeter. It also pays to start with the smallest panes and only then move on to the long straight runs.
