This accessory from the Plusmodel brand is meant for rendering an airman at a model of the French Nieuport XVII fighter aircraft in 1:32 scale. By itself it is not a model of an aircraft but an accessory that adds a human sense of scale to a finished machine. It is precisely a figure beside the fuselage or in the cockpit that shows at once how small the machines of the beginnings of aviation really were.
The Nieuport XVII was among the best-known fighter aircraft of the First World War. It was a light biplane with a markedly smaller lower wing, powered by a rotary engine, and it was famous for its agility as well as a good rate of climb. It entered service in 1916 and besides the French units it was used by the air arms of several further countries. Flying was done in open cockpits, so clothing was as important for a crew as the instruments.
With figures in this scale it pays off to build the paint up in layers: a base tone, then shadows into the folds and at the end lightened edges. The face and the hands deserve the most attention, because the eye falls on them first. The darker areas of the clothing come into their own when the gloss is kept only on the exposed places. Before painting, degrease the surface and let it dry thoroughly.
