About product

Photo-etched set for the exterior of the TBD-1 Devastator 1:32

A full photo-etched set from the Czech maker Eduard, aimed at the outside of the American Douglas TBD-1 Devastator carrier torpedo bomber in 1:32 scale. While interior sets deal with the cockpit, this one targets the surface of the airframe, that is the places where a plastic part is necessarily thicker than reality because of the injection molding process. A metal replacement makes it possible to have thin edges and a fine relief that shows at once on a large model. It is not an aircraft model; you need to have the plastic kit. The detailed contents of the fret are not stated here.

The real subject

When it was introduced the Douglas TBD-1 Devastator was a modern machine: an all-metal monoplane with retractable landing gear and folding wings, powered by a Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp radial engine, with a crew of three. The surface of the airframe therefore has plenty of rewarding places on a model, from panels and covers to the small fittings of carrier operations. At the Battle of Midway in June 1942 the squadrons armed with Devastators suffered heavy losses and the type was withdrawn from the front line shortly afterwards, which makes it a notable item in a collection of carrier aircraft.

Tips for working with photo-etched parts

Exterior sets call for more than gluing: usually the original plastic relief has to be sanded away so that the metal part seats level and no step appears. Work on small areas and dry fit as you go. Separate the parts with a sharp knife on a hard support and make the folds in a bending tool along the whole length of the edge. Glue with super glue applied on a piece of wire, and for larger parts choose a thicker variant with a longer setting time. Degrease before painting and lay on a primer meant for metal, otherwise the paint will not hold on smooth brass.

Who the set is for

  • For experienced modelers building the TBD-1 Devastator in 1:32 scale.
  • For those who do not mind sanding and reworking the plastic parts of a kit.
  • As a complement to a cockpit set, which this set does not replace.
  • For builders who want to finish a model even where it is visible without an open cockpit.

FAQ

No, it is a photo-etched accessory for a plastic kit, which you need to have.

It targets the outer surface of the airframe, not the pilot station. The two sets complement each other and neither replaces the other.

As a rule yes. The original relief is sanded away so that the metal part seats level and no step appears.

Degrease them, lay on a primer meant for metal and only then paint. Paint does not hold on bare brass.
