This set from MH models belongs among the painting masks for 1:32 scale and is focused on the markings of the aircraft from the Special Hobby kit. It is neither a model nor a kit. The masks are transferred onto a varnished surface and sprayed over with paint; the resulting insignia are part of the finish, so they can safely be weathered and even sanded.
The Westland Whirlwind F.Mk.I was a British twin-engine single-seat fighter with Rolls-Royce Peregrine engines, concentrated onboard armament in the nose and a high-set horizontal tail surface. Only a small number of machines were built. In service it proved itself mainly in attacks on ground and shipping targets, where its firepower and speed at low altitude came into their own.
Markings rarely make do with a single color. When an insignia is to consist of several shades, it is dealt with by applying masks in turn: the lightest tone is sprayed, it is covered with a mask of the next shape and the darker tone is sprayed, and so on. The exact register of the individual layers is critical, because even a shift of a tenth of a millimeter creates a visible rim in a large scale. It therefore pays to work from a clear reference edge, for example an engraved panel line or the edge of the previous mask, and to let the paint dry thoroughly between layers so that the previous coat is not damaged when a mask is peeled off. When a marking lies across the boundary of two camouflage colors, lay a thin coat of opaque paint underneath, as otherwise the shade of the insignia will differ on the two halves.
The item is an accessory for a model that has already been built. The kit and the paints are not supplied with it, unless stated otherwise.
