A masking set from the maker MH models for a model of the two-seat training version of the Heinkel He 162 in 1:72 scale. The set is for painting, not for building: it covers the cockpit glazing so that the canopy frames can be sprayed cleanly. In a small scale this is essential help, because the frames here measure tenths of a millimeter and a line drawn by hand is almost always thicker than it ought to be.
The He 162 came into being at the very end of the Second World War in the program for a people's fighter, the Volksjäger. It was a single-engine jet aircraft with a remarkable layout: the engine sat on top of the fuselage, the forward part of the airframe was largely wooden and the pilot had an ejection seat. The design relied on cheap and quick production from materials the war had not used up. The training version designated S was to prepare crews for such an unusual machine and was built as a two-seater; it never reached wider service, though. For modelers it is one of the most interesting late German chapters.
Degrease the glazing first and let it dry completely. Set the mask in place with dry fingers or with tweezers that have soft jaws, so that the edges do not ripple. Spray thinly and rather in two passes: on small frames a single heavy coat is enough to stop the edge being sharp. Take the mask off while the paint is only dry to the touch.
